Art Imitates Life Because the Truth is Often Stranger Than Fiction

While watching The International and The Last King of Scotland it dawned on me that many of the movies we watch are either “based on true events” or “ripped from the headlines, whether the tagline says it or not. For example, did you know that The International is (very) loosely based on the BCCI banking scandal of the 1980s? Or that the plot of Casino Royale in which an airliner was supposed to explode, making the villain a boatload of money is taken straight from the conspiracy theory that a suspiciously high number of put options were placed on United and American Airlines just before the 9/11 attacks? Naturally, this site needed a category dedicated to these things, so here it is; I present to you the newest category, Art Imitates Life.
The first trailer that I present to you is for the upcoming film Amelia starring Hilary Swank as Amelia Earhart, in theaters this October. Also starring are heavy-hitters Ewan McGregor and Richard Gere. Considering the star-studded cast and the fact Amelia Earhart will always be America’s sweetheart it’s pretty safe to say this biopic will be light on the facts, instead choosing to focus on the romantic side of the story. I’ll probably go see it anyway, especially since we don’t know how the story ends:
The next movie you should check out is called Coco Before Chanel. Releasing this September, this film is the story of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, founder of that famous line of fashion and accessories. I don’t know much about Chanel, other than the fact that my grandmother likes her 5th perfume, but it seems like it could be interesting.
