  • The first atomic bombs were designed and manufactured at Los Alamos. The first atomic bomb was tested at Trinity Site on the White Sands Proving Grounds.
  • The world’s first operational and purpose-built spaceport is located in Upham.

  • At 7000 feet above sea level, Santa Fe is the highest capital city in the U.S.
  • Smokey the Bear is from New Mexico. He was found trapped in a tree in Lincoln National Forest in 1950, after his home was destroyed by a fire.
  • Useless fact: Because of New Mexico’s dry climate, 75% of the roads are unpaved because they won’t wash away.
  • According to the North American Vexillological Association (a real organization that judges the designs of flags), New Mexico has the best designed flag of any state, territory, or Canadian province.
