  • South Carolina was the first state to secede from the United States in 1860.
  • The first battle of the Civil War occurred at Fort Sumter in 1861, when Confederate batteries bombarded the Federal garrison. Nobody died during the bombardment, but 2 people were killed during the 100-gun salute to the American flag, while the Union was surrendering.
  • Francis Salvador was the Jewish person elected to public office in America, when he was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly in 1774.
  • The first opera performed in America was in Charleston on February 18, 1735.
  • Duncan Park, located in Spartanburg, is home to the oldest minor league baseball stadium in the U.S.
  • Strom Thurmond became the first U.S. Senator elected by a write-in vote on November 2, 1954.
  • The flag of South Carolina is believed to have been designed in 1775. The blue matches the color of the militia’s uniforms, and the crescent was worn on the militia’s caps.
