An 1846 Map Showing Bermeja

Bermeja, an island in the Gulf of Mexico that existed on international maps for nearly 300 years, is gone. Many questions surround what happened to this mysterious island. One popular conspiracy theory is that the CIA blew it up so that the U.S. could stake a larger claim to the Gulf of Mexico. I love conspiracy theories, but this one is definitely false; the last map showing Bermeja was made in 1921, the CIA wasn’t formed until 1947. Other popular theories include that it suffered from a cataclysmic landslide, it got washed away in a storm, or the coordinates for it are wrong. It really is a fascinating story, one that makes you ask, how do you lose an 80 square kilometer island?
