Nathan Hale was a rising star in the Continental Army in 1776. At the age of 21, Hale was already a captain, and commanded a small contingent of troops guarding New York City. After the British victory at the Battle of Long Island, which allowed them to capture New York City in late August 1776. Subsequently, Hale volunteered to go behind enemy lines and report on British troops movements in the city. After being tricked into revealing his identity, Hale was arrested, and his fate was immediately sealed; at that time, spies were executed as illegal combatants. On September 22, 1776, Nathan Hale uttered his famous speech before his execution:

“I only regret that I have but one life to give to my country.”

Because of his act of bravery and sacrifice, Hale is considered America’s first spy, and is honored as such with a statue outside CIA headquarters in Langley, VA. Hale, who was born in Coventry, CT, is also the officially designated state hero of Connecticut.
