5 Random Things About Amazon.com

By Tamahome Jenkins · November 30, 2009

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! As such I thought it would be fitting to regale you with some fast facts about the world’s largest online retailer.

  1. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon, Inc. in 1994, as an online bookstore. A popular legend is that Bezos came up with his business plan on a road trip from New York to Seattle.
  2. Bezos originally wanted to name the company Abracadabra, but scrapped the named due to its complexity. Instead, Amazon is named after the South American River, which is the world’s largest river by volume.
  3. Amazon is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, but has operations worldwide.
  4. Since 2000, the Amazon logo has been the word “Amazon” with a curved arrow under it. The arrow represents a smile from customer satisfaction and goes from A to Z to represent that Amazon carries everything in the alphabet.Amazon logo
  5. Unlike other dotcom companies of the late 1990s, Amazon was more interested in slow growth, and creating value. As a matter of fact, Bezos did not plan for Amazon to turn a profit for at least 5 years. When the dotcom bubble burst, Amazon was able to survive, and turned its first profit in the fourth quarter of 2001: 1 cent per share. While Amazon has been largely profitable over the past 8 years, it’s cumulative profit is still in the red.

Bonus! Amazon generates three times the internet sales revenue of the next largest online retailer, Staples. Also, the domain Amazon.com is visited twice as much as Walmart.com.
