Did You Happen to Catch The People Speak?

By Tamahome Jenkins · December 14, 2009

Last night, the History channel broadcast The People Speak, a film in which various celebrities read some of the most famous American speeches of all time. It was produced by historian Howard Zinn, and based on his books A People’s History of the United States and Voices of a People’s History of the United States. It’s also the show that Matt Damon was plugging when he was juggling on the Jay Leno Show last week. After seeing Damon’s feat, I really wanted to watch it, but didn’t because I promised Mrs. Tamahome Jenkins that we would finally decorate for Christmas. Thankfully, the History channel has a lot of great information about the show on its website, and Santa knows I want the aforementioned books for Christmas. I’d imagine that’s nothing compared to watching Morgan Freeman recite Frederick Douglass, so hopefully it will re-air in the next few days. What are your thoughts about The People Speak? Even if you didn’t get a chance to watch it, would you consider watching it in the future?

If you’re like me and you missed the premiere of The People Speak, you can pre-order the DVD from the History shop.
