7 iPhone Apps for the History Geek in You
ByIt’s no secret that I am a technophile. In fact, the only thing I like more than gadgets is history. Needless to say, the iPhone makes the perfect platform to marry the two. So, if you think Santa’s going to bring you an iPhone (or iPod Touch) this Christmas, then you should definitely check out these apps. Be forewarned, these links open in iTunes. Also, the prices listed are current as of this writing.
Wikipanion Plus ($4.99): You may be wondering why I would recommend a paid app to access a free resource. The ability to search within a page and a cleaner interface than the mobile Wikipedia site alone are worth the money. The coup de grace, though, is the queue for offline browsing. If there’s a topic that interests you, simply add it to your queue, and the article will download in the background and be available to you should ever be without a network connection.
Constitution for iPhone and iPod Touch (FREE): Back in the day, people used to carry around paper copies of the U.S. Constitution. Unfortunately, those days are over, but you can still have the cornerstone of our country in your pocket. Pull this app out the next time you feel you’ve been treated unfairly by the police, or if you just want to own your next legal debate. Either way, everyone should know their rights.
The World Factbook 09 ($0.99): The World Factbook, produced by the CIA, is a world almanac that has been printed every year since 1962. It was initially meant for U.S. government employees, and was actually classified until the 1971 edition was published. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the World Factbook website, the 2009 World Factbook was the last print version of the book. Thankfully, if you want to bring the World Factbook with you, you can do so with this iPhone app.
Famous Speeches ($0.99): If you follow EiH on Twitter, then you know how much I like historical quotations. Well, where do you think I get them from? This iPhone app has a collection of speeches from the likes of Susan B. Anthony, Napoleon, Nelson Mandela, and more. If you want to take history greatest words with you, this is the app for you.
History: Maps of World (FREE): Nothing embodies the history of the world quite like a classic map. This app gives you a collection of classic maps from different eras, and its usefulness is only matched by its value. This perfect for any history or geography buff.
A Day in Music History ($0.99): This app is a “this day in history” almanac focused on the music industry. If you’ve ever wondered about what other things happened on June 25th (besides Michael Jackson’s death), then this app is for you. After all, the history of the world is also embodied in the arts.
Kindle for iPhone (FREE): This app isn’t exactly a history app, but it does open up a whole world of history books. through the Amazon Kindle Store. Furthermore, you can find a large collection of free classic books, as well as the occasional special on current books. If you enjoy reading traditional history books in a non-traditional format, then this app is for you.
You might be wondering why I haven’t listed an EiH iPhone app. Well, I haven’t gotten that far yet, but you can access a version of EiH designed specifically for your iPhone. Simply go to EverythingIsHistory.com from your iPhone or iPod Touch (or Android or touchscreen BlackBerry) and see the goodness of EiH in mobile form.
