I'm having a severe case of the author's barrier, and can't think of anything to write. So, since it's the first of October, and it's the only thing that I can think to write about, here are 5 random things about the 10th month of the year.
- October got it's name because in the old pre-Julian Roman calendars, it was the 8th month of the year (in Latin, octo means "eight").
- October starts on the same day of the week as January in a common year (non-leap year), and ends on the same day of the week as February every year.
- There are a number of month-long observances for the month of October, including:
- National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
- National Physical Therapy Month
- National Dental Hygiene Month
- Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender History Month
- Domestic Violence Awareness Month
- October's birthstone is the opal, which also happens to be Australia's national gemstone.
- The signs of the Zodiac for October are Libra (thru October 23rd) and Scorpio (thru November 22nd).
Bonus: October is also famous for being the month of the Bolshevik Revolution that swept Lenin and his friends into power in Russia in 1917. At the time, Russia was still on the Julian Calendar, so technically speaking, that revolution took place in November. I won't complain, though.
The Hunt for Red November just doesn't have the same ring to it.
